HOAX Emergency Relaunch Statement

In response to the global COVID-19 pandemic and accompanying social distancing efforts, we brought back HOAX at short notice in March. It returns as an online-only platform showing and publishing art and writing, and supporting artists and writers during this difficult time.

Launched in 2012, HOAX is a curatorial project dedicated to giving a print, digital and IRL platform to work that exists at the intersection of art and creative writing. You can read more about it here and see the work we've presented here. A return was always planned for HOAX after it went on hiatus in 2015, however, prompted by the current global need for social distancing, and the effects of this on both artists and audiences - postponements, cancellations and closures of events and platforms, as well as artists and writers losing vital income - we chose to bring the return of its online platform forward. This is so as to provide much-needed funds to creatives and ensure the facilitation and presentation of new work that can be engaged with remotely.

In order to make this happen, we ran a successful crowdfunder, and our enormous gratitude goes out to all who so generously donated. The entirety of the funds raised go directly to contributors, and will fund new weekly works until the end of 2020.

Now, we're launching a Patreon for friends and supporters of HOAX to make small, monthly gifts, which will allow us to move out of emergency re-launch phase and into an ongoing, sustainable funding and delivery approach. This will, very excitingly, enable a full relaunch of our print issues and, hopefully, events and exhibitions later this year and early next year.

HOAX is a labour of love. We pay all of our contributors, and each print issue of HOAX costs us a lot of money to produce and post to our stockists. We also don't take submissions fees and our print pamphlet is always free-of-charge to ensure fair access and obtainability.

We need to bring in around £150 / $200 in donations a month to keep HOAX going.

If you think what we do is worthwhile and can spare some change each month, join our Patreon supporters network! You can also donate through Paypal here.

Many initiatives to support artists during the pandemic still involve lengthy applications processes, and focus more on larger funding amounts or grants to produce more major work or projects. Meanwhile, there are many artists and writers out there struggling to afford groceries or make rent, and who need money right away, with even just small amounts going a long way. We wanted to plug this gap and support these creatives, forgoing any lengthy submissions processes to focus on being able to provide smaller fees with much more immediacy. As such, we absolutely do not expect new work to be made for HOAX (unless this is what contributors wish to do) and just ask that it's something that hasn't been shown, at least not widely, before and isn't already presented on another online platform.

HOAX is actively and uncompromisingly against fascism and discrimination, and is committed to showing work by people who are underrepresented in the arts and who share our values. You can read more about our principles here.

We would be extremely grateful if you would also consider promoting us through your channels to share our call for submissions widely and help us raise as much to pay artists with as possible!

You can get in touch with us at hoaxpublication@gmail.com with any questions, and sign up to our e-newsletter to receive news, events, opportunities and each online work as it is published. We would also love to hear from you if you’re interested in helping us raise funds for this initiative.
